The American journalist Glenn Greenwald claims that NSA modifies hardware equipment, exported from the U.S, to embed them with surveillance trappings in order to spy on international users.

These hardware devices include routers, servers, and so on. NSA is supposed to open them, modify the equipment with beacons and backdoor surveillance tools, and repackage them with manufacturer’s seals.

Glenn Greenwald has received the George Polk award for national security reporting for his 2013 NSA report.
